Happy Eid Mubarak

Routine is not a very good idea when it comes to Eid, the special Islamic occasion which all Muslims wait for it every year, and which ranks the end of the holy month of Ramadan, the month of fasting.

So here are some ideas of things you can do with the family to get out of the usual routine.

1. Plan in advance

Plan for what you intend to do on Eid before Eid comes. Call some friends or family members, make sure that everyone has a day off from work, school or any other commitment and start to plan for parties or celebrations. Invite others over in the after noon to spend the day together, or maybe have dinner at a restaurant in the evening.

2. Clean and decorate the home

Make the house as sparkling clean as you can. Make sure that the house is all clean and neat before Eid.
Then, once the house is virtually spotless, decorate it with balloons, lights, banners, or streamers. Get the younger kids involved in this process. Have them make decorative signs saying “Eid Mubarak” and post these around the house. Put some songs so everyone can sing along while they work.

3. Make special food

Making some delicious food is always a great idea. So try to make something special which the family does not normally eat, it can be sweet, sour or maybe both. The point is that Eid is special, and the food we eat on this day should be better and different from our usual meals.

4. Set up a family gift exchange

Exchanging gifts on Eid is one of the main Islamic traditions. As families and friends gather together in the morning or in the evening and start exchanging these gifts, adults are more likely to give young children money which is called “Eidia” to buy sweets and toys.

5. Buy new clothes

Kids will not feel that Eid is special if they did not buy new clothes. Accordingly, you must invest before Eid and get them something new. Or at least get everyone to prepare nice clothes for Eid by washing or getting them dry cleaned.

6. Share Eid with your neighbors

Make dessert, like a cake or some chocolate cookies and write up a short definition about Eid on a decorative card and share this with your neighbors.

7. Visit relatives and friends

Visit your friends and family living far away. There is almost no better time than Eid to do that. It’s also a great way to acquaint the kids with their relatives near and far.
